The Mother’s Day Gift Dilemma

March 3, 2016

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about buying the perfect present that shows just how much you appreciate your mum. Ellen Dunkerton goes on the search for some great gift ideas beyond the usual chocolates, flowers and bubble bath.

Created in 2005 as a part of The Card Factory Group, GettingPersonal provides thousands of unique and personalised gifts for any occasion.

For Mother’s Day they have your usual ‘Best Ever Mum’ wall hangings – but with the option of adding a personal message – or you can go that little bit further and get something really special.

For a cute gift, GettingPersonal offers a Family Tree Picture Frame, or if your mum likes to crack open a bottle of wine every now and then, a personalised label for her favourite type of wine might just be the gift that she’ll love. Not only that, but there are plenty of other gifts such as compact mirrors or wine glasses that you can have engraved with your own message.

GettingPersonal is reasonably priced, and sometimes gives you the option to have it gift wrapped – for an added fee, of course – but as it is UK based you don’t have to pay too much for postage and packaging.

Also founded in 2005, Etsy allows millions of people from all over the world to buy and sell all kinds of items that you’re unlikely to find on the high street.

These are people who have created a variety of unique and interesting items – from funky furniture to cute cards, as well as vintage goods that you’ll have a tough time finding elsewhere. Like GettingPersonal, there are some items listed with the ability to personalise.

However, with Etsy you can send shops messages and, as long as it’s something they can do, you can ask them to customise an existing item to make it more personal. A truly amazing gift if your mum loves books is to have I love you folded into the pages of a book.

Or how about a sundial personalised with whatever text you would like your mum to read? Etsy does also offer many more traditional gifts, such as soap, keyrings and funny cards. There is no end to the different sorts of spectacular gifts to buy, and for any other occasion, too.

If you can’t find anything that you think will suit your mum, then how about getting her a spa treatment at Thermae Bath Spa? They offer all sorts of relaxing treatments for one or two people. You could also take her out to a restaurant and treat her to a delicious meal.

Or how about an experience day at a race track, or flying a hot air balloon? There are plenty of gifts that any mother would love and appreciate. However, that’s not to say that she won’t want flowers and chocolate, as sometimes it’s the simple gestures that are appreciated most.
